Introduction

The Consortium for Intelligent Grid Research, Analysis & Education (CIGRAE) serves as the focal point for Virginia Tech’s activities and contributions to making the smart grid a reality. CIGRAE provides a platform to bring together the planners, designers, developers and users of the smart grid who come from industry, government, academia and the general public. Activities at the center include multi-disciplinary research in the areas of electric power systems, renewable energy technologies, and cyber security. The center serves as the gateway to the smart grid R&D base on the main campus in Blacksburg, Va. It is also home to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Smart Grid Information Clearinghouse portal, which is expected to be launched in mid-2010.
