The Dynamics of Energy:
Energy Security through Interdependence and Diversity
Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute -
Arlington, VA
This two-day course begins with a discussion of economic trends in demand and supply in the energy sector for the next 20-25 years, with the main focus on the oil and gas sectors. This is supplemented by a presentation on the changing dynamics between the user and supplier, including supply chain considerations both in the free market and closed market models. Discussions follow on interdependence and independence in the energy sector, including the issue of resource distribution and political challenges. Regional trends in energy supply and demand in North America, European Union, Asia, Africa and Latin America are included. Security considerations (both lessons learned and cooperative security) are addressed in detail. The course ends with a discussion of alternative sources of energy as a tool to provide strategic reliability and security.
Instructors come from the government (both military and civilian), industry and academia.
