The Evolving Knowledge Campus of the 21st Century
Abstract
This presentation discusses Sun's vision of the impact of technology
on
education. Sun envisage that Information Technology can be leveraged
in
a seamless manner to provide a secured webservice for personalised
learning, achievement and research. Some major mega trends influencing
the way education is adopting and implementing technologies are
discussed. The presentation concludes with Sun's technologies and
initiatives to enable the deployment of the Knowledge Campus.

Lim
Regional Director, Education & Research

Sun Microsystems
Andrew
Lim is the Asia South Regional Director for the Education and Research
Line of Business at Sun. He oversees the development of Sun's business
and strategic initiatives in the K-12, Higher Education, as well as
the research segments. Sun is focused on scientific research and engineering,
elearning, digital library, administrative infrastructure, and various
solutioning for the education community.
Andrew's
team is constantly working towards a tighter engagements with governments
in the region, to enhance the adoption of information technologies in
education and research collaboration. Sun has been actively partnering
with academic institutions in the region to transfercompetencies into
the various countries, to help enable these countries to be a net exported
of IT products and services. Students in many countries now have access
to all of Sun's online coursewares for free. Sun has also contributed
millions of dollars of softwares to the region in the past years.
Andrew
has more than 17 years of experience in the IT industry, with strong
backgrounds in the system integration business. He has been with Sun
for almost eight years, and has been on the current capacity for four
years. Prior to this he was the sales director for the Singapore operation.
Andrew was selected as the best manager at Sun for Asia Pacific, for
FY2000.
Prior to Sun, Andrew spent more than 9 years with Chartered Systems
& Engineering Pte Ltd (CSE), a member of the Singapore Technologies
group. He was responsible for building CSE's systems integration division
into a highly successful entity. One of the more visible project undertaken
was the Electronic Road Pricing project, where CSE implemented the highly
complex IT infrastructure.
Andrew
holds a Bachelors degree (1st Class Honours) in Electrical and Electronics
Engineering from the National University of Singapore. Andrew also attended
postgraduates studies at the Information Communicaton Institute of Singapore,
where he graduated as the top student in Data Communication and Networking.
