Bangladesh Telecom Backbone and International Gateway

Abstract

We all know, proliferation of Internet services and online applications pins heavily around the backbone infrastructure. Although little progress has been made in terms of reaching the new online applications out to the mass, apparently a strong enough backbone network is already in place. It stretches to the remotest upazillas, even some growth centers. Thanks to the consistent and plain terrain and non-commercial approach of Government lead telecom service provisioning. The network is now being mainly used for the narrow band voice only services. It can easily be coupled with any affordable last mile solution to extend the broadband services. This paper tries to provide a broad spectrum picture of the backbone network and the point of presences.

Due to the global nature of Internet and broadband application services, the requirement of International bandwidth is huge. It also sparks the issue of International gateway & tariffs. However this paper spots lights on the available physical layer connectivity options and future prospects. The ongoing effort for SEA-ME-WEA submarine cable connectivity is a silver lining on this issue. The paper gives an account of this venture.

Lastly the paper sheds some light on the available access technologies and options, there applicability and affordability.
