New Technologies

One technology that could be a solution to bridge the digital divide is WiMAX. The information provided below is based on WiMAX performance as of June 2005.

What is WiMAX
WiMAX is short for Worldwide Interoperability of Microwave Access. WiMAX is a Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN) technology that is based on a standard defined in the IEEE 802.16 specification.

WiMAX Performance
A typical base station provides high throughput enough to serve several businesses at T1 speed and a few thousand homes over a distance of 30 miles. WiMAX’s design for high data throughput, long-range wireless transmission, and low cost equipment is about to revolutionize the broadband wireless Internet access industry both in developed and developing countries. Key intriguing features include:

  • service area range upto 50 km from a base station
  • support non line of sight connection
  • up to 280 Mbps per base station
  • up to 10 Mbps of net throughput per subscriber
  • provide both voice (RJ-11) and data (RJ-45) connections

WiMAX Power Consumption
For BreezeMAX 3500 from Alvarion,

Subscriber unit: 100-240VAC, 50-60Hz
CPE ODU: 30W (customer premise equipment outdoor unit)
CPE IDU data: 40W (customer premise equipment indoor unit)
CPE IDU data+voice: 50W

Base Station: -36 to -72 VDC
BST PS: 200W each up to 4 PS (base station power supply)
AU IDU: 38W (access unit for indoor CPE)
AU ODU: 38W (access unit for outdoor CPE)
NPU: 70W (network processing unit)
PIU: 35W (power interface unit)
AVU: 24W (air ventilation unit)

BreezeMAX starter kit price
BreezeMAX micro base station promotion starter kit, which is comprised of: a micro base station unit, twenty CPEs and an AlvariSTAR NMS, costs US$23,650. This system is ideal for deployment in remote, low population density and rural areas since a micro base station unit will accommodate 20 CPEs. (source: www.telegroup-ltd.com)

The following elements are in the starter kit:

  • A BreezeMAX micro base station both indoor module (PN735207 for AC power or 735208 for DC power) and outdoor module (PN 735210 for band a or 735211 for band b).
  • 20 BreezeMAX data bridge CPEs, including indoor data bridge CPE (PN 735100) and outdoor radio with an integrated vertical polarized antenna (PN 735110).
  • AlvariSTAR NMS software with license for a single micro base station and 20 CPEs.
excluding base station cables, CPE cables, and the base station antenna.
