Northern Virginia Engineering (NVE) will host its annual Graduate Programs Open House at the Northern Virginia Center Wednesday, April 20 from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.    The event is free and open to the public.

NVE faculty will present information on the four engineering departments offered in the Northern Capital Region: Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering and Industrial & Systems Engineering.  New graduate programs in Information Assurance will also be exhibited.

Representatives from Alexandria Research Institute (ARI), a part of NVE, will showcase their research in fields including bioinformatics, distributed generation systems and wireless communications (see detailed list below).

“The Open House will give the public the opportunity to experience how ARI provides a platform for Virginia Tech's engineering and computer science researchers to interact with counterparts in academia, government and industry in the metropolitan Washington D.C. area,” stated Dr. Saifur Rahman, ARI director and professor.

Refreshments will be served and parking will be free after 7:00 p.m.  For directions, click here.  For more information on the event, contact Sarah Channing by phone at (703) 535-3440 or via email: schanning@vt.edu.

~Virginia Tech Designated as National Center of Academic

                      Excellence in Information Assurance Education~

Virginia Tech has been designated by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) for academic years 2005-2008.  This designation recognizes Virginia Tech as one of a select group of universities across the United States that plays a key role in educating professionals to reduce vulnerabilities and protect America 's cyberspace.

Receiving the NSA/DHS designation is a major step forward for Virginia Tech's efforts in the multi-disciplinary area of Information Assurance. The designation enables Virginia Tech to apply for scholarships and grants through the federal and DoD Information Assurance Scholarship Programs.

Northern Virginia Engineering offers graduate courses in information assurance and related fields including a graduate certificate in information assurance, and plans to offer a master’s degree of information assurance in the near future.   NVE’s information assurance efforts also include an information assurance colloquium. Experts from government, industry and academia are invited to address and interact with the colloquium participants. The colloquium provides an interactive forum, in both the National Capital Region and in Blacksburg , covering research, technology, applications, standards and policy-related issues.

A center for information assurance research and education is being launched with a mission to advance the knowledge and practice of information assurance through the integration of world-class multi-disciplinary research, highest quality education, strategic technology transfer and building partnerships. The center emphasizes local, national and international collaboration among academia, government and industry.

The center members will employ a "Teaching Hospital" model; a unified academic and real-world model integrating research, education, policy studies and practice. Virginia Tech aims at providing a highly effective environment for students, faculty and practitioners to work together on information assurance problem solving.

Faculty at the center come from the departments of computer science; electrical and computer engineering; accounting and information systems; finance, insurance and business law; and mathematics. Research projects at the center include security in wireless networks, intrusion detection, secure e-commerce and quality-of-service aware security, to name a few.

For details regarding Northern Virginia Engineering Information Assurance programs, stop by the Open House on April 20 or contact Dr. Mohamed Eltoweissy (toweissy@vt.edu).
