Honored Guests and Participants,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good Morning!

I am honored to give an address on this opening ceremony.

First of all, I would like to express my warm welcome to all participants. Welcome to Southeast University.

Smart grid as a new emergent technology is highly concerned worldwide and expected to re-construct the power systems, the International Forum on Smart Grid 2009 is a joint effort between the Southeast University and the Virginia Tech Advanced Research Institute. To ensure a successful forum, the forum staffs have paid great efforts and the sponsors Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, Anhui Electric Power Company, IEEE Nanjing Section IAS & PES Joint Chapter, Jiangsu Electrotechnical Society has also provided substantial support or effective instructions on the organizing issues.

As the organizer of the forum, Southeast University is one of the national key universities administered directly under the Ministry of Education of China. It is also one of the universities of “Project 211” and “985 Program”. These universities are financed by the central government to build as world-class universities. Our University is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in China. Its origin can be traced back to 1902, when it was founded as Sanjiang Normal College. Then, it evolved as: Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University and National Central University. During the nationwide restructuring of institutions of higher learning in 1952, Nanjing Institute of Technology was established on the original site of National Central University. In May 1988, the university was renamed Southeast University. Now, Southeast University has become a comprehensive university of high reputation, comprised of various departments of science,
engineering, art, social sciences, law, economics, management, languages, etc., with engineering as its focus. The university boasts over 40 schools or departments. The total number of faculty and staff is 6000, and the number of full-time students exceeds 30000, of whom about 9000 are postgraduates.

The School of Electrical Engineering has a long and distinguished history at Southeast University. It is originally established in 1923. Now the School has over 700 undergraduate students, 280 master degree postgraduates and 80 Ph.D. students. The School has currently over 50 academic and teaching staffs, including 23 full professors and 22 supporting staffs. The School has a wide range of research activities, grouped under six disciplines, namely electric machines & equipment, power system and automation, power electronics and electric drives, high voltage technology, electrical information technology, and new energy generation and distributed power supply.

We hope that this forum will promote the international communication and cooperation between the scientists and technicians in the respects of smart grid, and we expect that the power system group of Southeast University can take the opportunity to foster the relations with the worldwide scholars and make our education and research more international.

I wish the forum a great success and wish you a happy time during the forum.

Thanks!

Prof. Zhao Qiman
